SmartViews, Explained: Self-Serve Analytics for Private Capital Funds

Most fund reporting still runs on a request model. Someone needs a number cut a particular way, performance by vintage, net of a specific fee, for one class of investors, and it becomes a task for whoever owns the data. Export, rebuild in Excel with Entrilia’s Excel add-in, send it back. It works, but it's slow, and the version that comes back has left the system, so it can be wrong.

SmartViews is built to skip that loop. It's the analytics layer inside Entrilia where you build the view yourself: drag fields into rows, columns, and measures until you've got the cut you need. It sits alongside Entrilia's standard formatted reports (the statements, capital call notices, PCAPs) and covers the questions those leave out. The ones that are different every quarter.

How Is SmartViews Different From Entrilia's Standard Reports?

Entrilia's standard reports are production formatted at the push of a button: the financial statements, capital call notices, and PCAPs that have to come out the same way every period. SmartViews handles the other half of the work, the questions that are different every quarter and don't fit a fixed template.

Building a view is drag-and-drop, so the controller, the analyst, or the administrator who has the question gets the answer themselves instead of joining a queue behind the person who owns the data. And if that user lives in Excel, they can map existing reports to individual tabs in their workbook with our add-in, and refresh with one click from our deterministic structured layer.

The same engine powers the dashboards in Entrilia's investor portal. And any report can be published as an API, so you don't have to explain to your developer what Net IRR is and how to calculate it. You configure it once and let them consume it.

For a GP's in-house team that's speed when an LP is waiting. For a fund administrator running dozens of clients, it's how you take on more AUM while keeping headcount flat.

What Can You Use SmartViews For?

Across Entrilia's client base, SmartViews is used for the recurring analytical work that sits outside formatted reporting:

  • Reconciliations across positions, cash, and balances.
  • Investor and capital account rollforwards.
  • Capital account analysis by investor and class.
  • One-off investment performance cuts.
  • Share-class and multi-currency views.

These are the views where the right report is different for every fund and every quarter, which is why a self-serve layer fits them better than a fixed template.

Self-Serve Reporting That Stays Governed

Self-serve reporting usually comes with a catch. Once everyone can build their own view, the numbers scatter into competing workbooks and you lose track of which one is right. The familiar version of this is the quarter-end question nobody enjoys: which file did the auditors actually get?

SmartViews keeps the freedom and closes that gap, because every view reads from the same live, warehoused source built on Entrilia’s data layer hosted in Snowflake. The figures are current, and a measure means the same thing wherever it appears. A strong view gets built once, then saved and shared, and for administrators it can be reused across client instances, so a good reconciliation built for one fund carries over to the rest.

The Layer Behind Entrilia's AI

SmartViews is a governed semantic layer: a consistent definition of what each number means. That's useful on its own, because it's why a report, an Excel cell, and an API call all agree. It's also what AI needs to be trustworthy with financial data.

Entrilia's MCP Server lets AI assistants query live fund data through the same SmartViews logic that powers the reports, so every answer ties back to a defined number you can trace. The practical takeaway: the teams that get value from AI first are the ones whose data already has a clean, governed layer underneath. You earn that layer over years of running your reporting on it, well before the question of "doing AI" ever comes up.

Where This Is Heading

The shift is from reporting on request to reporting on the spot, on data you can trust, with a single governed layer sitting under reports, Excel, and AI alike. For most fund teams that's the difference between reporting on the quarter and understanding it.
